Integrating Nature Photography Into Interior Spaces: Tips for Interior Designers

Bring nature in. As an interior designer, you must have heard this phrase a million times, and let’s be real — it always makes a difference.

Incorporating houseplants, using natural materials like stone or wood, or maximizing natural light aren’t the only ways to integrate nature into interior spaces. Hanging natural photography is an underrated yet effective way to bring a sense of stillness that is lasting and feels meaningful.

Not sure where to begin? We’ve got you covered. Here are five tips you can follow when integrating nature photography into interior spaces:

    Prioritize Client Preference

Hanging nature photography or prints on the walls means your client will be looking at them every day. This is why it’s important to consider their preference and vision.

The artwork should reflect their personality and evoke positive emotions, be it energy, determination, or calmness. They might even have a favorite natural or landscape photographer.

We agree — a framed photograph cannot replicate the full sensory experience of looking at a scenic, breathtaking view. But it can still offer a calming visual. Nature photography will reduce mental fatigue and promote emotional balance in your client.

    Consider the Room’s Function

A well-chosen image can change the tone of a room. But it should first match the room’s function. For instance, tranquil, serene landscapes (misty lakes or forests) are best suited for bedrooms. They promote relaxation and can make your client feel more grounded.

For living areas or dining rooms, vibrant or dramatic landscapes do the trick. Every homeowner wants to display at least one piece of art that provokes conversation. As an interior designer, you can provide the opportunity.

Lastly, in offices, hang images that inspire energy. A soaring eagle or an owl making direct eye contact would look amazing.

    Select by Color Harmony

Hanging nature photography is also meant to create visually appealing combinations. This is why it’s important to choose photos that complement the room’s existing palette.

That said, matching colors doesn’t mean hanging a photo that practically blends into the wall. Having one or more colors from the photo match the colors in the room would look pretty aesthetic.

    Create a Focal Point

If your client wants the artwork to stand out and make a bold impression, do the reverse of the previous tip. Make the photograph or print match just one element of the room, such as a piece of furniture.

You can also make the art match the dark elements of the room. This works exceptionally well in professional spaces, as it creates a striking visual.

    Consider Placement and Sizing

Size and placement are critical for impact. You have a couple of options:

    • Hang a single large-format print above a major piece of furniture to anchor the space and make a statement.
    • Curate a gallery of multiple, smaller prints. Make sure they share a theme for cohesion.
    • Think about proportions. Make sure the art placed above furniture is at least two-thirds to three-quarters of the width of the furniture piece. This is necessary to create a balanced look.
